[W.I.P.] (RC1) Flat deck boat...
« on: April 09, 2007, 08:21:05 AM »
I would call it an early alpha version...
I am posting for feedback, so let me know what you think.

This one is based loosely on the ILAN concept here

Back up to the shore, use F1 and F2 for to operate the ramps, drive the car on it. Don't forget to lock the car/truck on the deck (o) or it will fall off really fast.
I have had limited success putting crates on it (they tend to fall through...)

You can place it in aspen.terrn by adding this line:
Code: [Select]
1737, 7, 2233, 0, 0, 0, truck ilan.truck
it's a short walk.

file is here: ilanbeta01.zip
EDIT: RC1 posted here: IlanRC1.zip

I tried to make a few boats, but they all turn left when standing still and driving..
And I can't seem to find the problem. :(
I'm watching you.

Hum, indeed... don't press L, it makes the boat explode, I'll look into it: it shouldn't do anything. What you want to do is use 'o' to secure the load

I will try to add sides (like the sides on the flatbeds) and see if helps prevent things falling off the sides... I also have to play around with the location of the ties

Thanks for the feedback everyone... will keep you posted when I make significant changes

Beta 2 attached to this post:

beta 02 changes: (from readme)
-made deck area bigger and adjusted nodes here and there.
-added side rails (keeps crates and cars on deck), currently move with ramps (I guess I could also make them independant (separate control)
-removed rogue ropes (causing exploding when using L)
-increased buoyancy a bit: can now handle a truck without sinking (barely)
-Crates will now stay on deck
-increased reach of ties (to handle crates)
-a bunch of cosmetic refinements, including some more meshing but (still a lot to do) and show/hide some beams.

As you can there are quite a few updates.

My next step will probably be finishing the mesh (the part connecting the hulls should be a mesh instead of the current mess of beams)

I will also start thinking about texturing in a more distant future... (this is my first project in RoR and I don't have much experience working with textures so this might take me a while)

If anyone comes up with ideas for improvement I will consider and add what I think I can do...

Let me know how this version works for you.

PS: I didn't post in the repo: I cant' seem to find a way to update the file :s and I don't even see how to upload a new file... not sure if I am just gone blind or if it's too late (time to go to bed for me!) but I figured I would just attach it here...

A couple things I would like to see:

  • A way to lock it down when loading, so it doesn't bob up and down with the waves.
  • More power! i.e. make it faster.

That's all I can think of for now....

Can`t you make the engine stronger? 2,3 maybe 4 times stronger, because now the ship is too slow. Also it can have bigger steering answer. I don`t know how to do it myself......

RC1 posted in the Repo!

Download: 110/IlanRC1.zip
New for RC1:
-fully meshed
-skinned (wave clipart from http://www.aperfectworld.org): looks half decent now...
-slightly more payload capacity
-more power (popular request)
-more rigidity
-better turning (not great yet)

Let me know how you like it.

you must edit the the .terrn file to spawn it already in the water. just replace the name of another boat in that file with the name of this one.

Actually, You can click twice on IlanRC1.zip and change ilan.truck to ilan.boat. It worked for me!
