Tower Crane
« on: September 04, 2007, 10:33:55 AM »
Well seen as this crane has attracted some interest i thought it deserved a topic of its own.

Here is the second version of my tower crane, Changes are:

New sub meshes (still not great but a good improvement)
Seat and custom controls added to crane cab
Crane base added to for looks(and to hide floating bug)
Boom lights and beacon added
0.32 sections included

As for using the crane you need to place it on the terrain, spawning in truck stop will not work.
My position on the aspen terrain is:
Code: [Select]
1899.735107,    14.186810,  2196.322754,     0.000011,     0.000000,     0.000000, truck TowerCrane.load

Ive included a beta version here and once no-one else has problems ill add it to the repository.

Edit:
Version 3 now fixes cab camera positions and enter/exit vehicle position.

Sorry about the last zip files, they didn't include the crane mesh texture and hook material file. Updated!

Edit:
Version 4 Fixes
Trolley improved greatly
Prop changes
Crane is now a load(spawn crane using terrain file, not truck stop and then use normally)

Edit:
Version 5 released
New textures and more submeshes, now decks and ladders.
Optional hook cam, just activate by removing the";" in the camera and cinecam section of the load file.

Edit:
Version 6 released
This one updates the mechanics of the crane, the trolley now runs on a track.
leading to a much more realistic crane.
Crane is now a .fixed file
texture fixes
added hook cam

Edit:
Version 7 Released
Added shiny yellow beams
Sorted and added beam sizes
Improved the strength, but still major damage done wen heavy loads are lifted.
And replaced the old trolley with a meshed trolley that looks way better.

Looks good, and spawning it from a truckstop is indeed not a good idea.  You could rename it to .load.

However, there are some issues:
- Textures are not included, submeshes are just white for me
- Props have no textures either   (no reference to textures in the material file??)
- moving the hook forward/back to makes makes the crane brake.  F3/F4

Thanks for letting me know trevor, seems like no matter how hard i try i always seem to forget something when im finishing. should have really tested it on a clean install.

Well ive updated the crane to version 4,

as trevor said the commands that moved the trolley would break, so after a bit of fiddling i figured it out.

list of changes:
Fixed trolley breaking bug
Added more support to trolley(less wobbling about.)
made controller meshes a little more flashy
I also changed the crane to a load. (thx for the idea trevor, this will stop unsuspecting people from spawning in truck stop)

Can you move the camara section to the base
This will allow the external view to remain fixed and stable (ie, when rotating the crane, the view won't move. It's also stable when the crane is wobbleing) and also give a better view of the ground, which is where most of your items requiring a lift will be located.

The cinecame section can remain where it is.

I think thats the way i have it.

There are two camera's, first one at the base, and second on the cab, and then there are cinecam's at the base and cab also.

i thought this worked? in the cab you wobble with the crane and at the base your steady. Also the external camera stays still.

Hmm, might be.
What I like to do is position the "camera" close to the target I'm trying to hook, so I'm zoomed in on that. Ie, that object is between camera and the cameras target.

The main problem I see is from the outside view, the camera is aimed at the cab. So when you zoom in you can't see the ground.
If it was aimed at the base then you can zoom in and still see the ground.

I could put a third camera out in the air below the end of the boom, this may give the position you want.

Ill have an updated version tomorrow.

May try to add ladders and decks to the tower.

Not sure that it will. I thought the chase camera (outside view) was aimed at the first cinecam position.

I can put a floating static cam, that will be out near the hook, like the cab cam.

maybe you can place a cinecam above the trolley (that thing that moves back and forth on the jib), like on the picture. So you can see when the trolley is right above the object you wanna lift.

Humm it is strange thomas. maybe its due to it being a load? Or having no wheels?

they are the only things i can see that are different from normal trucks.

Ahh sorry i forgot to answer your question Nikon.

Open your ror folder, go into "data/terrains" folder. Open "aspen.terrn" file in notepad.

then add this line of code beside the other similar ones.

1899.735107,    14.186810,  2196.322754,     0.000011,     0.000000,     0.000000, truck towercrane.load

I have updated the Tower crane once again.

This is a major update to the mechanics of the crane and give a much more realistic simulation of a crane.

By using inviable submeshes the trolley now wont bounce around like it used to meaning a much more stable crane all round. Bending and flexing is not like it used to be, but looks very impressive.

This one I'm proud of.

P.s. could someone update the repository version... thanks in advance ;)
